In its short existence to date, Passionfruit has had no fewer than ten productions, three of them touring productions, and all of them successful. Walk a Crooked Mile, a midland ‘take’ on Hamlet – the third part of the so-called ‘Belmont trilogy’ directed by Paul Fagan - received a standing ovation on its final night in the Dean Crowe Theatre Athlone in 2006. Passionfruit’s most recent touring production was in summer 2007 with O.J. Healy’s new play With Wandering Steps and Slow, again directed by Paul Fagan.

The Passionfruit agenda is very much a midlands one. The late Professor Gus Martin of UCD best summed it up when he wrote:

“There is a neglect of the great provincial hinterland represented by Mullingar, Roscrea, Kilkenny and Athlone where the real dynamism of change and development is centred. When our city writers go down the country they invariably head for exotic and exceptional places like Ballyferriter and Achill, bypassing a whole provincial ethos…”

The Passionfruit venue is also open to touring theatre companies. In late 2008 we hosted Conor Lovett in First Love by Samuel Beckett, Promises Promises by Margaret Mullan, The Confessions, the Truth and the Lies of an Old Reprobate with Pat Flannery and Meet You at the Second Bench by Jane Caulfield.
